Project:
Stenarna reser - Stones traveling
Year:
2020 - Ongoing
Overview
Stones can travel, and move like humans. Both voluntarily and forced. Historically, rocks have been traveled, for example, due to the Big Bang, the ice age, volcanic eruptions, and landslides. But mountains are considered to be something immobile and static. With the movement of the stones, the project wants to discuss what a journey is and means. The stones selected are both individuals and parts of a larger whole, fractals.
Stones traveling is an attempt to move the line between nature and art, original and copy. How and when does a stone become an artwork? How does the transformation from a geological object to a symbolic / metaphorical artistic object take place? The stones become a substitute for the mountains that remain where they always stood.

2019 I started to collect stones from different peaks and analyse them artistically. With each collected stone, I made a ”stone print”, staining the stones with watercolor then print on paper. I also made frottage with charcoal. After that, the stones are moved to new peaks. The movements are made as performative acts and documented with photography, video and audio. Recently I also made 3D-copies of the stones and bronce-sculptures. Untill now I have collected 58 stones, 43 of them are catalogised, 36 of them have travelled to new peaks.

What is the artwork, the original or the copy?
What is the artwork worth if it’s original or a copy?"
